Bank of England wants to end monoculture and groupthink
Bank of England wants to end monoculture and groupthinkBank of England wants to end monoculture and groupthinkThe head of Englands national bank made it clear that the institution has a long way to go in terms of representing the UK populace, so it seeks to step up its game in terms of diversity.Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, gave a speechon the topic, saying that frequent charges levelled at this central bank like many of our peers include being mono-culture, secretive and ridden with groupthink. The speech is from February, but is newly relevant as the U.S. Federal Reserve - the American counterpart to the Bank of England - battles a scandal that may became worse because of secretiveness and groupthink. The Fedis closing ranks to push back against a leak investigation that has already claimed the resignation of the Richmond Fed president - and some predict there may be mora.Which all goes to say, Carney is right while companies should try to reflect who they cate r to,science has also proven that having employees who come from a range of cultures and different genders is good for business.120th in a long line of male GovernorsCarney touched on the history of the bank, showing that this concept has not always been at the forefront of the institutions mindset. He pointed out that the first female Court member was only appointed in 1993, that five years afterward, the first Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic memberjoined, that graduate intakewas drawn from just 11 universities ten years before, and thathe is the 120th in a very long line of male Governors of the Bank.He breaks down why they value diversity in three main reasons that it is the right thing to do, so as a public organization, it should seek to reflect the diversity of the public it serves, it helps increase trustwe need to deliver our remits, (referring to research from 1993 and 2009) and that because its known that diversity leads to more creative thinking and reduces the risks of g roupthink and bias.He used diversity as a jumping off point, however, adding that its more than that- we also need to choose inclusiveness. The benefits of inclusivity in the workplaceThe Governor of the Bank of Englandemphasized thatdiversity comes in both identity and cognitive form. In other words, its the difference between who you are versus how you think. Carney was making reference to concepts from a 2016 working paper and a 2007 book).Carney spoke about how and whydiversity can boost trust, improve both how decisions and ideas are made and flexibility, and that it will help communication- saying specifically, being diverse can help us to craft communications that people can actually understand. The Bank will reportedly step up its diversity and inclusion in three ways by recruiting more diverse talent, by creating a more inclusive culturethat encourages people to openly debate, challenge and present ideas, and that supports them whenworking on something new, and by creating inclusive communications.Carney mentioned various initiatives in his speech, but one that stood out in terms ofthe Banks commitment to diverse hiring was a set of goals. The institutionseeks to triple both the proportions of women in our senior roles, to 35% by 2020, and of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic workers in these roles to 13% by 2022.Science-backed reasons to strive for inclusion at workTaking a diverse approach at work will not only ensure that employees feel more included, but it can have an impact on how much money a companygenerates.A McKinsey report that studied proprietary data sets for 366 public companies in different types of industries in Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and the United States found that companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians. The same report found that gender diversity can lead to higher company earnings, or EBIT.I n the United Kingdom, greater gender diversity on the senior-executive team corresponded to the highest performance uplift in our data set for every 10 percent increase in gender diversity, EBIT rose by 3.5 percent, the McKinsey article said.Another case was made for gender diversity.MIT News reported that a study co-authored by a researcher from the university found that shifting from an all-male or all-female bro to one split evenly along gender lines could increase revenue by roughly 41 percent. The study reportedly drew from eight years of revenue data and survey results, covering 1995 to 2002, from a professional-services firm with more than 60 offices in the United States and abroad. The Bank of Englands push to be more inclusivereflects the growing need for many companies to see the benefits of challenging traditional hiring practices.

How to Deal with an Arrogant Co-worker - The Muse
How to Deal with an Arrogant Co-worker - The MuseHow to Deal with an Arrogant Co-worker There you are, working your heart out at the office, humbly doing amazing things to further your department and company goals, when along comes Smarty McBrags-a-Lot, touting her latest accomplishment and basking in her grotuerisch glory. Maybe she even brushes past you without deigning to acknowledge your presence. Rude You feel your ire begin to rise, and along with it, your blood pressure. It eats at you, this uncalled for behavior. What do you do? How do you handle that arrogant colleague who constantly gets under your skin? Look Within YourselfFirst, lets talk about you. Its one thing to be occasionally annoyed or aggravated by an arrogant co-worker. As long as its not frequent and isnt disrupting your life, you dont need to be too concerned. Its another thing, though, to become increasingly agitated or absolutely consumed with frustration and anger. If you have trouble concentrating, lose sle ep, or find yourself complaining frequently and vehemently about the offending co-worker, you have to figure out how to overcome your feelings before they wreck your career. So heres a hard truth When someone really gets under your skin, its not usually the person whos the problem. Most likely, those feelings are a reflection of something about you. Maybe youre actually a bit jealous of something your colleague has accomplished, or you feel insecure about your productivity compared to your colleague (more on that later). If you feel completely at peace with who you are, then another persons quirks should simply be amusing or, at worst, a bit aggravating- not maddening, and certainly not consuming. So be honest with yourself about why Braggy Obnoxious bothers you. You dont have to tell anyone else about it, but you need to understand it. Your awareness is your secret weapon, which leads to my next recommendation.Dont Hand Over Your PowerReacting poorly to a persons arrogance wont chan ge anything about it. In fact, if your arrogant colleague- or any problematic colleague, for that matter- figures out how to push your buttons, youve handed over some of your power. If that person is both arrogant and evil, he just might use that knowledge to antagonize you and then sit back and watch you combust. Then you end up looking like the jerk, while your colleague continues being as arrogant as ever. Instead of reacting, strive to understand why a person gets to you so much, which can help you regain control and refocus your energy. Are you jealous that hes getting recognition for something he did really well? Then its time to focus on all the things you are doing well and learn how to promote those things, so that you, too, get noticed for your amazing work. Did she network like a rock star at a recent office party, while you communed with the wallpaper? Well, then its time to figure out how to build your network in a way that fits your personality.Once you figure out what you need to focus on, youll no longer have a reason to give so much energy to Braggy McBraggerton- because youll be busy building your personal brand. Minimize Your Time Together and Keep Things FocusedEven when you have the inner peace of Po the Kung-fu Panda, youll probably still feel some annoyance with certain personality types. You are human, after all, and you arent likely to click with everyone. So, if you have to work with Smug Magoo, do your best to keep it brief. Just because you have to work together doesnt mean you have to push your desks together all Starsky-and-Hutch style (unless youre actually both police officers in a precinct that does that, in which case- good luck).Working on a project with that person? Set meetings with strict start and end times. Do your best to butt those meetings up against other meetings so you must leave at the pre-determined end time. Dont have another meeting on your calendar? Figure out something to work on, and put it on your calendar so you arent fumbling for an explanation for why you cant extend the meeting. Then, think ahead about what needs to be accomplished when you meet, and set an agenda so there is less chance of wandering off topic and over time. If your colleague does get off topic, rein him or her back in Wow, thats interesting Hey, Ive got another meeting in 15 minutes, so lets make the final decision about the dates were going to host those focus groups. Need help being assertive? Here are a few resources. If said colleague has a tendency to just show up at your desk, close your door. If your co-worker persists, you may need to be more direct and set clearer boundaries. Just keep it simple and straightforward Scott, I know I always seem flustered when you pop in. Unfortunately, I just dont have a lot of free time to chat right now because I am up against a tough deadline. binnensee you at our meeting tomorrow? Remember, you can only control yourself. You cannot control other people- no matter how mu ch you may want to- but you can allow them to control you if you hand your energy and attention over to them. Focus on yourself, and minimize your time with problematic colleagues. You will be calmer, and it will show in the quality of your work.Photo of peacock courtesy of Shutterstock.

Five Ways to Improve your Healthcare Hiring Process
Five Ways to Improve your Healthcare Hiring ProcessFive Ways to Improve your Healthcare Hiring ProcessFive Ways to Improve your Healthcare Hiring Process BoernerShifting reimbursements. Readmission penalties. Thirty million patients newly insured under healthcare reform. The looming retirement of millions of Baby Boomers. Put together, its a recipe for an especially challenging healthcare hiring process. Here are five ways to hone your hiring practices for healthcare hiring, both today and in the future.Hire a Team PlayerThe bulletin board behind Eileen Rowlands office at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City lists at least a dozen councils her nurses can join. Rowland, HHSs director of nurse recruitment, uses the list as a kollektivwork test for job candidates.I point at it and say, Can you imagine yourself on one of these councils? she says. Some people are genuinely excited. Others, you can tell they dont give a hoot. If they dont care, this isnt the right place for them.Wi th the rise of coordinated care, healthcare organizations are reorienting towardrecruiting team players and that means the hiring process has to target technically adept candidates who also have soft skills communication skills, an ability to work with different personalities and group problem solving skills.Rowland recommends that once you vet a candidate, get specific about their team player experience Have they been parte of teams in their current jobs? What roles did they play? How did they contribute to a hospital initiative or project? And she asks these follow-up interview questions Were they involved in sports? Its not that someone who hasnt played sports cant be a good team member, she says. But when youre looking at new grads, looking to see what group activities people are part of is always a good idea.Interview SmartlyIf youre taking a team approach, it makes sense to bring the team into the hiring process as well, says David Twitchell, co-director of HR for Rutland Regio nal Medical Center in Vermont. This serves two purposes careful vetting of new hires and employee engagement.Be sure to include at least one person in the interview process who will be the new hires coworker, as well as someone on a different hospital team with whom the hire may have to coordinate care. Hiring managers and supervisors should also be given a shot to vet the candidate. These can be done over multiple interviews, but too arduous a hiring process can backfire, leaving the candidate with a bad impression of the company and ultimately damage the companys reputation among job seekers. The only exception to this, says Esther Cuno, recruiting manager for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, is executive leadership. Its often hard to get all the players for those positions together at once, necessitating multiple visits.Otherwise, says Rowland, try to confine the interviews to one visit, if possible.Good people wont linger on the market even in this economy, she says. I dont want t o give the candidate an opportunity to meet another recruiter because I couldnt get it done today.Create a Consistent Interview ProcessCuno has heard it over and over again A hiring manager will tell her, I thought he would do so well. He really gelled with the team. He had a great personality. But its not working out.You absolutely can get blinded by personality in interviews, she says. The key to avoiding that, she says, is to be prepared and consistent. Strong personalities can pull interviewers off track, leaving them to realize later that they didnt get all the information they need to determine whether the candidate could succeed in the job.If youre consistent and ask everyone the saatkorn interview questions, youll be better able to weed out candidates who interview well but may not serve your organizational mission.Hire Tech Savvy CandidatesThe emergence of electronic medical records has added a new layer of vetting to Twitchells hiring processes. You have to make sure candida tes are computer literate and savvy, says Twitchell, also leader of the Society for Human Resources Managements HR Disciplines Expertise Panel.Ever since we went to electronic medical records two years ago, weve done an assessment across our organization internally, to see where we had to develop opportunities to coach current staff. New staff must already have the skills. The good news is that many candidates are HITECH savvy so much so that in the tech-savvy Pacific Northwest, Cuno considers it a core function. Rowland verifies that people have experience with the programs they use and, in the end, tests candidates tech skills to provide an extra layer of protection.Invest in Your StaffIts been proven over and over again that employees accept or decline an offer based in large part on the employee benefits offered. That will become more important as newly-insured patients guarantees flood the system. One of our current challenges is forecasting in advance of actual needs, Cuno says .In order to really plan for the future, its important to recruit at all different experience levels, so you dont have a huge wave of retirements and a huge wave of change. So take your recruiting further. Cuno plans to expand recruitment beyond the region this year and target candidates nationally. Shes also exploring new internship programs, residency and preceptor programs, and is looking outside the oncology field for potential hires.Shes also looking for better ways to provide employee training and advancement for their current staff. Rowland even brings continuing healthcare education on campus for staff convenience. While such investment can be expensive, Cuno says, so is hiring the wrong person.Read moreEngage New Nursing Graduates for Future Hiring NeedsIT Staffing for Healthcare Recruiting for HITECH Retaining Healthcare Professionals with Education Benefits

How to Stay Positive During Your Modeling Career
How to Stay Positive During Your Modeling CareerHow to Stay Positive During Your Modeling CareerWhether youre being told no in a relationship, at a job, or in just about anything else in life, its a difficult word to hear. Many models hear the word no numerous times until they make it big, and it can be hard to stay positive during this process. Unfortunately, the word no, can cause many aspiring models to give up before they reach their modeling goals. Luckily, there are things you can do to not only increase your chances of hearing yes but there are also ways to stay positive when you dont get the answer you had hoped to hear. Here are four ways to stay positive while you work on making it big as a model. Refocus Your Attention Rather than wasting energy thinking about it, refocus that energy into becoming a better model. Whether its attending an acting class, a runway workshop, getting new headshots, or just learning more about the industry, there are far better ways to spend your energy than dwelling on your disappointment. You might even take the time to find a modeling mentor or someone who inspires you to become better in your personal and professional life. Keep Trying Unfortunately, some models will take hearing no a few times as a sign they should give up. Models with a positive attitude, however, keep in mind that the more often they hear no, the closer they are to getting to a yes If you think hearing no means you should give up your dreams of becoming a professional model, think again. Many of the most successful models today have been through exactly what youre going through. Everybody (models or not) starts somewhere, and for many models, this somewhere is the often challenging road to getting scouted, discovered, and hired as a model. Practice Makes Perfect Even if you arent hired to model from a casting call you attended, you can still get a great deal of valuable experience just from the audition or tryout practice. Take note of what other models are doing at casting calls, and see if they have skills that might be beneficial for you to learn. There will always be someone with more experience than you, so why not take the chance to learn from them, rather than be intimidated by them and give up? Remember, sometimes there isnt anything you could have done differently or better, you just simply werent the right face for the job, or not what the casting directors had pictured for the campaign. There will come a time when although another model is more experienced than you, YOU are what the casting agents had in mind, and it will be your turn to hear Yes Do Things That Make You Feel Good While there is always an element of uncertainty when it comes to casting calls and trying to get jobs as a model, there are things you already know you can do to make yourself feel better. Maybe its exercising, catching up with a friend, watching your favorite movie, getting a facial, or a good old-fashioned bubble bath. W hatever it is, take the time to reward yourself for your efforts because casting calls and auditions are never easy. Just because you were not chosen for the job, doesnt mean you didnt work hard and that you dont deserve to feel good about yourself.

Wearables Help Stroke Victims
Wearables Help Stroke Victims Wearables Help Stroke Victims Imagine the feeling of not being able to do all the routine, effortless movements youve always performed. The motion of brushing your teeth. Putting one foot in front of the other to walk your dog. Even raising a spoon of cereal to your lips to start your day. This unfortunately can sometimes be the fate of a stroke victim. And rehabilitation can equal huge frustration, at a time when the patient is already frustrated.A team at New York University has the goal of making this uphill climb a little easier for stroke victims through a new, low-cost, wearable sensor system.Strokes are a very common problem in the United States, he says. There has been a high concentration of research on stroke patients, says Ashwin Raj Kumar, who has a masters degree in mechanical engineering from New York University and is presently pursuing his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering there. And people dont realize there is a large number of young stro ke patients here also, people who want to get back to their life, too. According to the American Stroke Associations website, each year approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke. For rehabilitation, they go to clinics but few products supplement the rehab well in a home-based setting, Raj Kumar says.Sensors in the jacket measure arm placement. Image NYUTheir system involves wearable devices, which include a glove and a jacket to have microcontrollers measure the movements of a user and feed it to a smartphone, giving the data to patient and doctor alike. This can lead to more interaction between them, with the doctor able to be that much more involved in helping the patient in between in-person visits, he says. One of the areas the glove looks at is the wrist orientation and the jacket focuses of arm orientation. Sensors show the user how theyre doing when it comes to tasks such as lifting or gripping. The user performs the action and sees the effect. This gives them a fe eling of control in their improvement, says Raj Kumar. They arent just doing exercises but getting true feedback to encourage and feel part of a team achieving a goal.It can also be used in a virtual reality game, allowing a user to see what they should be doing and adding a little fun to tasks that can otherwise seem like pure drudgery. They see their performance when doing the exercises in parts of the body not affected by the stroke which can possibly help serve as a teaching tool for the areas needing rehabilitation, he says. The plan is to take the device and make many prototypes and work with stroke centers to understand how effective the rehabilitation is and well incorporate that feedback, he says. There are challenges with this work. Even when designing the glove, you need to think about how it will be effective. A stroke patient can have a closed fist, for example. Youre trying to create a device that will give them comfort when theyre already feeling less than comfortable. As much as anything, they want to give them hope.Strokes can happen at any time and often take someone out of a normal life without any warning, says Raj Kumar. Think about being jolted like that. We want to get them back to what they knew beforehand if its possible.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsrepor ts that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming a nd projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement . Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
